I advocate clarity about what I want students to pay attention to, to study, and if they all do it earnestly enough, they all get A's. The whole secret-exam-content notion is familiar to me, but it can at-most be for "filtering" purposes, not really for educational. By coincidence, I'd just written an email to the PhD Written Prelim Cte here (of which I'm chair), promoting the idea that we've stopped filtering, but, instead, are guiding students... :)
