Read Jean Dieudonné's History of Functional Analysis. More precisely, read §VII.4: The spectral theory of von Neumann§VII.4: The spectral theory of von Neumann. Chapter I of von Neumann's Mathematical foundations of Quantum Mechanics is very interesting too.
