@Mauricio I'm trying to understand better his role. I'm specifically interested in the principal of homogeneity, which Viete expresses, Descartes rejects, and, as far as I can tell, was not adopted by Al-Khwarizmi.

Who calculated for the first time the volume (and surface area) of the sphere exactly?
In "$ r:s<A:r^2<p:q$", the first $r$ is a constant integer, whereas the second $r$ means the radius - is that correct?

While in general I like Knuth's insights into notation, I find $m \backslash n$ very confusing.
